About Us

The story of The Hippo Taproom

The first bar from Hippo Beers

In November 2012, owners Derek Hoy & Alec Knox first opened the doors of Hippo Beers, Glasgow‘s first independent dedicated speciality beer store  on Queen Margaret Drive in Glasgow’s West End. Specialising in Craft Beer, Real Ale, and World beers, Hippo Beers quickly became an institution in the Glasgow beer scene renowned for its great range and customer service.

3½ years later that expertise and commitment to serving high quality beer, cider, wines & spirits led Hippo Beers to open their first bar on Glasgow’s iconic Sauchiehall Street – The Hippo Taproom was born.

Good times, Great Beers and so much more

Probably the best we visited on our trip. The entrance is just a single door of the high street but goes down stairs to a very cool bar with a brilliant range of ales.

Tripadvisor user DannyTheBlade“Fantastic bar”

I’m seeing cask ales here that I’ve previously only ever drunk in Yorkshire! This is currently my favourite pub in Glasgow.

We had a very nice evening at the Hippo having a few beers and chatting with the bartenders. Craig was very personable and we enjoyed talking with him about the local brewing scene and how the beers stacked up. He graciously offered a sample or two the ensure we liked what we were purchasing. Overall, highly recommend and will gladly return if I ever make it back to Glasgow.

What a pleasant surprise when I stopped right in front of the entrance to answer a call! I had just entered a path of beer-goodness… The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable. As my friend was quite picky, they managed to pinpoint what he would like and that’s always a good thing. Even I ,who knew what I would take, could have a quick taste in order not to order something that would disappoint me. Good point!
